Since they burst on the scene, I have followed the Raptors intently; read every article about them; watched almost every game; gone to every playoff game; argued the hell out of every single decision that was made (on and off the floor); and supported this team every way I knew how. What I have found is that I have developed an incredible love/hate relationship for this franchise.
I am guilty of intently following every development, and not being able to enjoy the accomplishments without not-so-quietly predicting imminent doom. Injuries, pussy franchise players, lack of leadership from management and coaches, and company toting analysts had all conspired to turn me into a bitter Raptors fan. Over the past several years, we have all watched this franchise flush itself down the loo. BUT, what put me over the edge was watching Babcock trade Vince Carter for a bag of basketball balls. I can honestly say from that moment, I started to look for a different team to support. Not because Carter was traded, but because the fate of this franchise was in the hands of an idiot.
Once Colangelo took the reigns, he talked about vision and excellence. These are my buzz words, and he preached them, so I signed myself up to his bandwagon. Right away, he brought in 9 new players, changed the digs around, and hung the garlic outside the locker room to exorcise the demons of years past, but the Raptors started the season the same way they began the previous one…LIKE ASS!
Then all of sudden, they went on a rampage, and tore up the league. Winning games we all never expected, and giving us tingles (well they gave me tingles) night in and night out. With all of this going on, I sat in the shadows waiting for this team to self destruct, but they didn’t. The injury bug, a small one, hit Bosh and TJ, and the team maintained. Suspect coaching (at times, not all the time) and nothing, they kept winning. They won the Atlantic, have a choke hold on 3rd in the conference, with no end in sight.
It all culminated for me last night with a tea bagging of the Bulls. Bosh is a bad ass, TJ is sick, Parker is smooth as silk, and even Joey Graham has seemed to have recovered from his bout of timidity (thanks coach). I have no answers other than this team is ready for prime time.
