We all know who the scapegoat is for BryCo’s inept decision making. Jay Triano will be taking over in an interim capacity. Will let you know more as this develops.

It really was only a matter of time. When Bosh was frustrated and did not join his team in a timeout a week or so ago the writing was on the wall. Im surprise it comes this early though. I though it would have come at Jan 1 when they are closer to 9-20 or so.
Now that he is gone, will there be a replacement this season or will they ride it out with Triano to save money?
Will Bryco go overcap to make deal?

i dont think it’s bryco’s scapegoat. mitchell just isnt an nba calibre coach.

Rapshater if i can recall you posted a blog where you said sam was not going anywhere.. Well you where wrong on your assesment.. Let me tell you something else i have been dead on, with all my calls..
Hollywood dont be surprised that sam is gone.. If you had been watching basketball as long as i have and can recall people wanting sam’s head since two years ago when colangelo took over, you would then realize that it was long over due. When my girlfriend, who knows not much of basketball can see that Sam coaches terrible then it does not take a genious to know he was a gonner. Why now? Tell you why! Cause it takes time for the new coach to jell with the team, therefore leaving plenty of time before the playoffs for this team to get back to there winning ways.
I would tell you what the next move is but i really dont know this one. Colangelo is in a tough situation, i posted it on my blog that 2010 is the year where the best guard or wing man is available for this team. None other then wade. Sources say that it could be reality.. And if thats the case raptor fans, you will have to settle for first round knock outs again for the next two years.. Its not worth going over the cap to get what is left out there.. I would bite the bullit for 2 years or you will end up with gordon, magette type players who will compete but never get you to the promise land.. Come to think of it we had a guy like that. His name was Vince carte. No thank you.
Colangelo good luck!

rapshater, mitchell may not have been the best coach, but he is definitely nba calibre. you all know i wasn’t his biggest fan, but he will be back in the league really soon…maybe washington
as far as the writing being on the wall, it was there in the summer. colangelo can say what he wants about this team (this is the most talented team he has put together in toronto), but the fact it is it wasn’t. no depth.
luis, totally agreed on the next couple seasons. i doubt he breaks the bank. something needed to happen with this team, and he chose the coach as apposed to spending more of mlse’s money. wade would be sweet tho! what is your blog?

wow, thats crazy.
I was just writing an article today about some of Bryco’s next possible steps. I will make a few changes to it and have it up shortly.
wow.
It appears that my vote of confidence for Sam last week is what did him in?
But in truth, losing by 40 in Denver appears to be the final straw.
who’s next? hopefully colangelo’s got a plan better than Triano to fix this situation.

Fellas, I don’t think coaching contracts count against the cap, do they?
December 3rd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
no they don’t flux, just a contract that they have to eat.
December 3rd, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Luis,
You are right that a new coach needs to gel with a team. I am only surprised that they decided to get rid of the coach now (I am have written on this site before not only to fire sam, on many occasions, but that the only reason he was still here was because he had won coach of the year so Bryco was handcuffed to resign him.)With the way that the economy had been hit, owing mitchell 4 mil for 2 more seasons, and in obtaining another high calibre coach, who Im sure would command as much money as mitchell( probably more), was this something that MLSE would accept for a team that is 8-9? I guess getting spanked (a verb) by Denver was the last straw.

But was this the right time?

just finished the new article on SMITCH - should be up soon

hey Luis, I said he wasnt going anywhere after they were 6-6, but then they go and put together 2 of the worst performances in the history of the franchise back-to-back. you’d have to be Phil jackson or Doc Rivers not to get the boot after that.
speaking of being wrong…in 2010 the raptors are not going to get Wade. Id love to see it, but it aint going to happen…you’ll be the one who’s wrong with that little pipe dream

Raps Fan my blog is down for the time being, however you can chat with me on this website regularly after games, same day or next…I agree with you as far as another team will pick up Sam.. This move is a well intended move and here are the reasons why.
1. As per salary, you dont lose a penny.. You continue to play with an assistant coach who already is under contract.. He just takes over the coaching role..
2. We pay for Sam’s contract for this year and i believe the next one as well.. Well guess what! We would have done that regardless if he was still our coach.
3. You let triano play out the year.. If there is no hall of fame calibre coaches in the market next year and you like what triano did, keep him for the next one as well.
4. Lastly.. Everyone can relate to colangelo when he says i have been around triano long enough to know that he has the smart’s and personality needed for that changing room.. Hiring within sometimes is better than out.. They have had more one on one talks with him than any other nba coach.. With the other coaches you go by records, when you hire within you know his every move..
Rapshater you have to own up when your wrong and i have been wrong at times with some of my own calls… Those last two horrific performance where not bacause the raptors suck or where not talented enough.. Again you miss the point! This goes back to a team who did not want to play anymore and lost trust in there head coach Sam mitchell.. And it goes way before the 6-6 record you talk about.. This goes into last year..Sam got out coached by the nets in the playoffs 2 years ago.. Sam got out coached aginst the orlando coach last year.. I was at the game, and you could clearly see that those teams both took the raptors heart by game 2-3 respectively..
Wade is not off the radar, colangelo is well respected in this league.. There are many players that would love to play for him.. But he knows who he wants, and when to get it.. It will be a wade and Bosh duo in 2010 with a Bargnani and oneal front court.. Jose anchor..
Besides if you read my latest quotes i predicted that its not worth going over the cap for the next two years.. Colangelo stated yesterday that he intends to do just that.. If thats not a hint on when he will spend the over the cap money then i dont know what else to say..

You put together the type of roster the Raptors have right now and your “credibility” throughout the NBA goes down appreciably, once you say publically that … it is the most talented team which you have assembled yet … as it’s performing the way it is, to this point, this season.
Astute basketball people everywhere can now see for themselves the talent-level which exists on this team, which is in plain view.
IMO, Sam Mitchell certainly could.
Being a past recipient of the NBA’s EOTY Award means absolutely zilch.
This award is not voted on by accredited members of the Basketball Writers Association. This award is voted on, exclusively, by the other GM’s in the NBA … many of whom are acknowledged by astute people within the basketball community as, in fact, being something less-than very good at their own jobs, in the first place.
Media people around the League are now beginning the task of questioning whether or not Bryan [Son of Jerry] Colangelo is really all THAT when it comes to assembling a championship calibre team in the NBA.
FACT IS … he was unable to do it in Phoenix, when his father was the owner of the team.
FACT IS … he hasn’t been able to do it, thus far, in Toronto, which is 1 of the TOP 5 markets in North America today.
Credibility is as credibility does, in this League.

Sam Mitchell is a great “player’s coach” that got fired because of poor GM decisions. People can say what they want about Sam, but at the end of the day, his players loved him and would play their hearts out for him. He made all is players better (Bosh, Anthony Parker, Jose…well maybe not Andrea!). By the way, in the NBA, the primary qualities of a good coach is one who commands the respect of his players. Colangelo did a really poor job in the offseason by not getting rid of Andrea and getting a more athletic/aggressive player in the 2 0r 3 slot, and a decent backup point guard to relieve Jose. Instead, he signs a broken down O’Neal who does not complement Bosh’s offensive style, and cannot run the floor. This is another example of a good coach getting blamed for poor GM personnel decisions.

Dwight, what are you smoking?
The only mistake that the GM made was that he didn’t fire Smitch sooner. Colangelo is a great GM, Toronto couldn’t have asked for a better one. The problem here with the team was that Sam Mitchell and Bryan Colangelo have different views/ideas how the team should be run.
Right now the Toronto Raptors team has really TALENTED (BOLD letters) players. (BARGNANI amazing after raptors got JO, and something about roko ukic i really really like) If only raptors fixed problems in defence, rebounding, energy/toughness they would become one of the best teams in the east, and the nba. no jokes. A good coach could fix all these problems.
My point? Don’t lose faith in Colangelo (he’s a smart guy. all i’ve seen were logical and smart decisions from him)
oh, and let’s not cry for smitch. he’s an ok coach, but as i said not in the same page as BC
