Playoffs - Game 5

Arsenalist: “We practically lost this series with the magic running the same play about 250 times. Drive, kick and shoot.”

That about sums it up really. I’m really at a loss for words. I blame Smitch for this crap. Say what you want AltRaps, but when questions about substitutions, strategy and adjustments arise…whatever, the man sucks as a coach. The Smitch watch is officially in full affect as far as I’m concerned.

Bosh was incognito in the most important game of the season. He put up 16pts and 9rebs, but really was a non-factor in the game. From the tip off, he settled for jumpers, and didn’t attack the rim until late in the 4th. Howard/Lewis can’t cover the guy, but he bails them out by shooting J’s from the perimeter. I understand that he can knock them down, but when he isn’t knocking them down, and isn’t driving, there is no space to operate.

The officiating sucked balls. It is frustrating to watch so many missed calls, bad calls, late calls, make-up calls and all around bad calls. I don’t know what kind of scrutiny these guys come under for their decisions, but it seems to get worse every year. Anyways, enough with that…

I wish I could say that the Raptors played well, but they really didn’t. It was more of the same from the previous 4 games. Orlando came out strong, but they started to turn the ball over (unforced) and missed a ton of open looks. The Raptors seemed to be a bit more active on the defensive end, and did a pretty good job in the 1st on the offensive glass, but you knew once the Magic started to hit all those open looks, the game would get out of hand.

The Magic easily won the battle of the boards, grabbing 55 (16 offensive) to the Raptors 37 (9 offensive). Had it not been for all those turnovers 13, and all those missed threes (they went 9-32) this game would have been a blowout.

Down 80-72, the Raptors went on a 10-4 run, to cut the lead to 2. We all knew what was to come. Some ill advised shots, no rebounding, no pressure, nothing. Anyways, with the score 84-82, Delfino jacks a shot from the elbow, early in the shot clock and with no one rebounding, obviously missing. And the Raptors were outscored 18-10 the rest of the way with the familiar penetration and kick to an open shooter for the three.

Unfortunately that is all I have say. Am I surprised, no, I called the Magic in 5, am I disappointed? Yes, of course. The Magic won this series by coming out strong in the 1st, coasting for the 2nd and 3rd, and turning it on in the 4th. Aside from game 1, every single game was there for the Raptors to take, and no one grabbed the low hanging fruit. That’s about all I got for now. This isn’t the end of the season for RaptorsTalk.com, we have a full off-season of speculation, second guessing, our two-cents and general dismay in store for you. The pleasure has been mine (bloggin, not watching these guys stink it up):

Thanks for all your hard work Raps Fan and for providing us with a forum to vent our frustrations. I liked the way the raptors battled only to make bad decisions down the stretch and lose the game. I’m not suprised either I called the Magic in five as well. I look forward to an offseason of serenity and not having to yell at my television because of Smitch’s hairbrained substitutions and lack of set plays.

  2. AltRaps Says:

Ah man….I get called out in a negative way to end the season!?! Dude, I’m sick and this just made it worse! :(

We will agree to disagree. I had this discussion tonight as well: last season we saw better ball movement, less reliance on just dumping it and standing around, and better play out of the trap and (arguably) better play against the zone. If anything, my worst nightmare from last year offensively was inbounding the ball. I lost more sweat on that than anything else.

Fast forward to today. Many of the above have taken a step back. Do you think Sam went away from these things? Not likely. We brought in a one trick pony and a guy that was buried on the bench in Detroit and expected to get better?? Yeah. Okay.

Anyway, I can see your argument and can appreciate it, but I truly don’t lay the blame at his feet. Room for Sam to improve? Absolutely. However I think this roster has to improve more and, surprisingly, I think local media might actually run with that this summer. Sam did a good job the past month or so pointing out some things in laymans terms and that prompted BC to come out with “well, I think some of the guys were underused”. Well, I think some guys were “misdrafted and mistraded”.

Good series, in my opinion. To say a .500 team took the third seed to task for the majority of quarters in a series shouldn’t be overlooked.

And, to echo Rod, thanks for a great season of blogs. You have made this site one of the necessary stops before and after games for many people and the time and effort you’ve put into it shows. Keep it up over the summer.

bc deserves more criticism then he will get. i’ll save any threats directed to him until he resigns delfino for a 3yr/12mill contract, then trades for larry hughes…

So looks like the good times for Carlos DELFINO and the Raptors have come to an end. The Orlando Magic defeated the Raptors 102-92 to win the series 4-1.

In today’s game, the showed tremendous amount of fighting spirit to stay alive in this series. Both of their point guard, TJ and CALDERON played well, Chris BOSH showed plenty of determination and Carlos was the sixth man for them.

Tonight DELFINO posted 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists & 2 steals to finish of what turns out to be his best ever season in his NBA career.

Remember he had a lot of tough times in Detroit. There were plenty of uncertainties about his arrival to the Raps squad. But like Luis SCOLA, he has proven that he can play in the NBA.

On some occasion when others could not deliver, he provides the much needed sparks that the Raptors needed from the bench. He steps in for BOSH when the latter was out injured.

I will be looking forward to see how would the Raptors regroup for next season. Till then, I would like to give thanks to the numerous comments that we’ve received from the entire Raps blogging community.

    VAMOS CARLOS!!! VAMOS RAPTORS!!!

Thanks Raps fan for a fine season. The Raptors blog/fan world has grown a lot and I have enjoyed all the arguing/bitching/discussion.

I only wish we could all have a Rap-party for some closure on this year.

last season ended and I was very excited for the following year. Right now I am kind of blah.

BC needs to do some serious work to get me all jacked up for Nov. 1.

I think SMitch can still be the coach of this team but won’t be shocked if he is out.

Give the guy one Reggie Evans clone and I think that makes coaching much easier.

This team has very little fight or desire.

Bosh is an All-Star but not a leader/heat and soul guy.

Anyways, if my blog ever works again I will be posting some post-postseaon stuff and of course anything the Raps do in the summer.

Keep in touch, there are always the ladies to come look at on Cuzoogle.

How many times did you count Bargnani ball-watching? You think we could’ve used him on the glass today? Either you’re getting the rebound or you’re boxing out, this guy does neither. I don’t believe we have to send him to summer school to teach him basic shit like that.

The officiating did suck but wasn’t the reason we lost, I did think that Howard got away with a lot this series, especially 3-second calls. But Lewis/Hedo killed us too, no officiating to blame there.

The sad thing about this Raptors team is that their effort can be very easily questioned, that doesn’t sit right with me.

  10. Raps Fan Says:

i’m pretty sure his offseason regime will be a lot of basketball 101. he really needs that education. hopefully it sticks, and hopefully whoever he is practicing with is a tough SOB who knocks him on his ass, and his only ticket to getting dinner is to grab 20 boards in scrimmage.

as far as sam being safe, as long as their is a plan, and a commitment to fielding a team that will compete (like the 76ers) then the coach is a secondary concern until you are fighting for the east or a championship. i think we can all agree (i mean you alt) that smitch is probably not the guy you want running show in a battle of wits with the top tier coaches in the league. right, right?

  11. AltRaps Says:

Here is a (valid) question in my mind, though:

How many “top tier coaches” remain in the NBA?

Obviously it’s a personal opinion question, but what coaches out there do you consider a top tier coach?

I mean, look at Woodson in Atlanta and how that team has turned around. Is he a top tier coach? Byron Scott? Are they great coaches or the leader of talent?

I was pleased to see those in bounds plays yesterday. I was also pleased to see a change in defensive strategy. That is coaching. Lack of rebounding and having a petulant point guard isn’t.

AltRaps’s last blog post..Sam is safe

  12. Raps Fan Says:

they are definitely a leader of talent, they also have loads more talent than the raptors. i mean byron has mopete starting for him! lol.

the inbounds plays were good, and the change in defense seemed to be more of a willingness on the players than anything that would have been implemented.

so to answer your question, no, they are top tier coaches, and wouldn’t be the ones to out a top coach in a playoff series.

would i take them over smitch? maybe scott…definitely not woodson.

  13. khandor Says:

Following in the footsteps of Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, etc., Byron Scott is (without question) a terrific top tier NBA coach.
