We Have Ourselves a Series!

Posted on 25 April 2008 by Raps Fan

There is no place like home…where the hell were these guys the last two games? The Raptors came out, and gave a full 48 minute effort against the Magic. Smitch must have been passing around that brain juice. I expected a win, I’ll be honest, but not one where Bosh got 15pts 5rebs 5ast.

From the tip, TJ/Calderon took it right to the Magic guards, eliminating the staple “penetration and kick for an open trey.” Forderon had a brilliant game, combining for 39pts 16ast 12reb and 4to, while limiting Nelson/Arroyo to 8pts 7ast 4rebs and 2to’s. Ford was the man in the 1st half, and Calderon picked up the slack the rest of the game. The offensive production was great, but their defense was the key. It has been a while since they have outclassed an apposing teams point guard(s).

Parker and Moon did a great job keeping Turkoglu off the board in the 1st quarter. Denying him the ball, clogging the lanes and contesting his every move. I’m not the biggest Moon fan, he isn’t disciplined enough on the offensive end for my tastes, but I appreciate him responding to his demotion from the first two games the way he did. He hit the boards hard, took shots in rhythm (except the last 3) and played solid defense. Turkoglu got his in the end, the guy is sick, but limiting his effectiveness in the 1st quarter was crucial to the win.

A big cog in the machine was Bargnani’s defense on Howard. Never thought I would ever say that, but he kept active on the defensive end, and forced Howard out of his comfort zone around the paint. He contested shots, played great positional defense and was an all around pest for the big guy. The Raptors won the battle of the boards 42-34, Orlando still grabbed 10 offensive boards, but they were hard fought.

I was going back and forth with AltRaps over messenger the whole game, and he pointed out, more then once, how Smitch did a bang up job. I’m not one too hate, and have ripped Smitch one everytime he made a bad judgment call (imho), but he was on the ball tonight. He made great substitutions, actually called timely timeouts, and the Raptors seemed to respond to his pre-game brain juice he was passing around.

Playoff Kapono is a different beast than regular season Kapono. He is getting more minutes, and a few more touches, but he is really aggressive on the offensive end. Manufacturing shots, getting open behind the arc, nailing daggers. I imagine this is what BC had in mind when he signed him to that massive contract. Is he worth the money? Probably not. Is he finally earning those ridiculous cheques? Definitely. He is really making a case for himself as a starter come next season.

Down 21 to start the 4th, the Magic made a run, and cut the lead to single digits, but the Raptors didn’t fold. They made timely shots, made defensive plays (tips, steals, blocks) that lead to a score in transition, and really took it to Howard, forcing him to commit 3 fouls in the 3rd. Howard picked up his 5th foul early in the final quarter, and was really limited in his ability to be aggressive on both ends of the floor.

What was incredible about this game was that the Raptors won in convincing fashion, without shooting an out of this world percentage from the field. We have become accustomed to seeing the Raptors shooting 53% + in big wins, but they were held under 50% (marginally) and still pumped out 108 points. They did it by sharing the ball, hitting the glass, forcing turnovers - and capitalizing on them, and hitting their shots when it mattered. All this on an average offensive night by Bosh who really leaned on the Forderon, Kapono, Moon and Parker to carry the load. Hats off man. I’m a happy camper…on to the PBP:

Now serving crow with a side of ostrich…Mr RaptorsTalk, your order is ready.

    caaaahhh….caaaah…..

    Fantastic recap.

Interesting to hear that Jameer went down with bad back spasms as he left the court at the end of the game. Could explain his lack of agression.

Can’t get too excited. Need to take Game 4. Let’s hope they find some buyers for those empty seats behind the bench.

Oh, and Kapono? Worth every penny…just to watch him on defence. More entertaining than dances at the Brass Rail.

a dinosaur-like performance by the Raptors….. that I even thought it was scripted

Maybe Superman and his Magic Man simply forgot that this is Jurassic Park. Not any type of ball playground.

But you’ve got to give the most credit the Raps point guard. As if the both of them were having they’re own version Rap Battle.

I can’t think of any team that has this luxury in that department. I guess this is where the Raps could utilize to win this series.

Another win to tie this series and another to turn the whole city Metropolis into Dinasour park. We believe!!!!

    Vamos vamos Raptors!!!!

that game was awesome! I needed that to renew my love for the Raptors. Calderon and FOrd were awesome, I love when Jose’s running the floor and when TJ is breaking guys off the dribble, Moon almost has a double-double in the first half, Kapono found his shot…again, Bosh is the man.
Game 4 will be a tough one

  5. cuzzy Says:

I have read in a few places on how Bargs was impressive. I ripped him over at Cuzoogle for looking lost and not boarding as usual. Now that I look back he did have a few good stands on Howard but I guess with him I always look at the bad.

It always seems when there is a breakdown you know who it is.

He hit some shots and did ok on D but he can’t continue to be a yo-yo from good to bad.

Is David Miller worried about Kapono taking his mayor spot, jeeez that guy is on fire.

Gimmie more Playoff Kapono! I was at the game last night and the crowd was amazing. Raptors spirit is alive :)

bargs’ man defense is decent, like a fire got lit under his ass or something.. i think this series is going to be a huge asset for him to have under his belt cuz he’s trying to guard one of the most dominant opposing C’s in the game. yes he does need to learn to rebound.. if not then at least use his giant ass and wingspan to body up and box out.

yes his offense is still bruck, but if he follows through on his supposedly redonk summer schedule and learns to play like a big guy on O then i think this dude will be something special. seriously. hopefully by next year he’ll develop something a little more complex than the 3pt pump fake, step in chuck n pray. i’m eager to see his game next year.

i don’t get what’s going on with kapono. he’s doing exactly what everyone said he was incapable of doing, which is “flipping the switch on in the playoffs”. shows what we know eh?

    gfg. anyone goin to game4?
ps. always a pleasure to read your blogs. you too cuzzy.

  8. Raps Fan Says:

apparently colangelo doesn’t want bargnani to practice/play with the italian olympic team. the kid will be put through the ringer in the summer going from one training camp to another. bout time.

as for kapono, i didn’t know he had that on switch. he better keep that shit on.

thanks man, i appreciate that :)

  9. Arsenalist Says:

masterjuddi, I don’t believe you said you need to “renew” your love for the Raptors. Those mofos can go 0-82 and I’d still love them.

I think we won fairly easily but you also kinda knew that if the Magic had just knocked down 3-4 of their wide open looks in that third quarter, this would’ve been a game down the stretch. IMHO, we still need to do a better job of closing out their corner guys (Bogans and Evans), they had bad games but their due for a good one now.

Arsenalist’s last blog post..Game 3: Raptors fight past Magic but its only one game

  10. Raps Fan Says:

0-82 huh arse? i’m in that same boat…glad to see you suffer the same affliction as me (aka raptered fan syndrome).

totally agree on the shooting. they went pretty cold after the 1st quarter of game 2. i expect game 4 to be a tight affair, both sides have a lot to prove.

  11. masterjuddi Says:

i dont care what team it is…if they go 0-82 I wont be watching too many games. the thing i hate is, planning a night to watch a bball game and the raptors stink up the place. i dont mind losing if your team competes to their best, but taking terrible shots and not boxing out is infuriating. I do love when they win and I was jumping off the couch the other day

  12. VISHUS Says:

The Raps fans are the greatest. The loudest and most worthy fans ever!!!
The sixth man was the main reason for our win. In Orlando, Horward hit most of his free throws but because of the ACC noise he ws unable to do so. Howard can play it off as if it didnt make a difference but surely it showed in his performance that it did affect his play, although he still played well. Obviously, not as well as he did in Orlando. Also, I give credit to Andrea as he played smothering D on Howard. This is why we drafted him. Only wish he could be more consistent. Kapono seems to be Sam’s secret weapon. He didnt show mch of him in the regular season but now he is coming off screens way faster than he did in the regular season. We need him again. Im not yet fully impressed with Moon only because he cant ball handle so well. If he gets that down packed, the Moon will rise higher and shine brighter than the sun.
