Raptors lose to the Nuggets 109-100 [35-35] - March 23, 2008

Posted on 23 March 2008 by Raps Fan

It’s been a few wonderful days since I haven’t had to report on game stats for a Raptors game. The quality of my life has increased 26%: I have my appetite back, the weather is getting better, my knees aren’t aching, heart is ok, it’s my New Years. With traffic to RaptorsTalk.com falling in the wake of a couples game without my play-by-play, the sadist in me was screaming for me to turn to the Denver game, I was more than happy to watch Hellboy in HD (can’t wait for the sequel), but my RFS was acting up.

This was the best game the Raptors have played against an elite team in a couple months. They came out of the gates, firing on all cylinders. Shooting a blazing 66% from the field. They moved the ball around the perimeter, found the hot player (mostly Bargnani, who had a great half, but didn’t play much afterwards), and stuck their shots. Bosh even had 5 assists. Not surprisingly, they had a 12 point lead at the end of the 1st.

In true Raptor fashion, they went away from the things that were working for them:

  • Parker started the game on Iverson, limiting his effectiveness on the offensive end. This stopped for some reason in the 2nd half until the mid-way point of the 4th.
  • The Raptors stopped slashing through the paint with the ball in the post in Bosh’s hands.
  • The Raptors stopped moving the ball around the perimeter.
  • Bargnani was planted on the bench for most of the 2nd half.

This forces me to wonder what Smitch was barking at the guys to do. Seriously, you take a 12 point lead doing all those positive things, and stop doing them for no apparent reason. Denver did pick up their defense, but it isn’t as though they are a great defensive team.

It wasn’t all on Smitch, Denver is a better team, there is question. Karl has more options when things aren’t going well for him, against the Raptors anyways…to the start the 3rd quarter, Karl subbed JR Smith in for Anthony Carter, forcing Calderon over to Iverson. This was the definitive move as far as I am concerned. Denver grinded their way back into the game, and took the lead in the 4th.

The next point of interest came with the Raptors down 2 at the 4 minute markish. The Raptors coming out of a timeout, Calderon gets the ball to Moon at the top of the arc, he is open, and jacks and misses a trey. Early in the shot clock, and without anyone banging in the post for a rebound. He has been taking those types of shots all season, but not the last few games. Given the way he was playing, I was actually surprised he took it. All in all, Moon had a great game. He really made Carmelo work on the offensive end, blocking 3 of his shots, and forcing him to take 28 shots to score 33 points.

The third defining moment was with the Raptors down 1 with 2:36 left in the game, out of the timeout, Parker and Calderon were playing pick and roll, except Bosh didn’t really roll. Parker was looking for the pass, left his feet, and had to kick out to Calderon at the top of the arc in mid air. Calderon gave it back to Parker on the elbow extend; Parker tried to dump the ball into Bosh, but K-Mart stole the ball, took it coast-to-coast, Calderon fouled him with clear path, 2 plus possession and the game is over.

Bargnani started the game like a man possessed, popping from all over the court. I am going on record with this, but he really doesn’t do things differently from a game-to-game basis. Hear me out: in the games he has good offensive output, all he does is hit his shots, which leads to more minutes, which leads to more shots. He forces shots from time-to-time, but really, the difference between a good and bad game is that he hits more. Case in point today…he comes out in the first half hitting his shots, getting 16 points in 14 minutes. To start the 3rd, he misses 4 shots, and that’s it for him for the game, he sits out the last 16 minutes of the game.

Bosh played like a champ, coming 1 assist shy of his first triple double. He almost got that one assist, but Rasho missed a contest half-hook from close. Again, he fell victim to the Raptors moving away from what was working. He got the bulk of his dimes from the post, finding the slasher in the paint. That all but stopped after the 1st quarter, where he had 5 of his 9.

What was Smitch’s strategy you may ask:

Yup, the Moon three was Cleveland all over again. WTF is he doing taking THE shot of the game without even doing a re-postup for Bosh. Where does this guy get the balls to shoot that three? That was the game right there.

The AP/Bosh pick ‘n roll was AP’s fault, he had Bosh rolling to the rim (however slowly) and the pass needed to be made, it wasn’t and that was it.

Chuck/Leo ripping on JR Smith was classic, they more they ripped, they more he scored.

moon has been taking those kinds of shots all season, this was the worst of the lot.

i agree the ap pick and roll was parkers fault, but bosh needs to make a harder roll. he didn’t, and parker should of shot it because he had a good look, but he didn’t, and the rest was academic.

the jr smith bashing was hilarious, they had a point, but the way they ripped into him made them look like idiots when he started to make things happen.

  3. Trocca Says:

The raps need to look seriously at parting ways with Sam Mitchel. I like him and it is nice to see a Raptors coach who could actually get another NBA job after he is fired, but they need better in game strategy/lineup management. Jamario is the one taking crucial shots, because other teams let him take them, because he is a marginal NBA player. Lets try Jeff Van Gundy. It can’t hurt

    Happy New Year.

That clear path foul was the dumbest play I have seen…maybe ever…at the ACC. And, the good news is, the guy behind me actually saw it and said the same thing, so for about 3 minutes I had a basketball lovers group hug. Well, verbally.

KMarts D on Bosh was outstanding. I mean, out of this world type stuff. Don’t know how much off-the-ball stuff was shown on TV, but KMart was riding Bosh like a mule. You can bet the game tape will be making the rounds tomorrow to the Pistons, whom we will see in the first round.

And speaking of odd moves, it seemed that JR Smith was out of the game for most of the fourth. Probably wasn’t true, but it was odd to see Carter out there for as long as he was since he was having an off game.

Oh, and you haven’t lived until you’ve seen the Raptor dressed up in an easter dress and bonnet. Man.

Hope you got out to buy some new clothes, some flowers and enjoyed some reshteh polo.

Much health and success to you and yours.

(PS. Fire up a video blog soon, would ya?)

I don’t think Detroit + first round exit is a foregone conclusion just yet. Even if the raptors played the way they did tonight (on average) against the remaining teams, they have a better chance at finishing with a nicer record than Philadelphia and face Orlando.

Out of the twelve remaining raptors games, only three of them will definitely be tough and the rest of them are losable just because the raptors like to drop games to shitty teams. Philadelphia will have to outplay six very good teams for starters and not shit the bed against their “easy” opponents. Philadelpha has been hot, but I think the raptors can pull this off. Even if they don’t and it’s Detroit Brick City, it’s still a moral victory because it should prompt some needed changes.

  6. AltRaps Says:

Darien, after you mentioning needed changes if they face Detroit, I’ve just become a late-season Philly fan.

I really don’t think this team, as constructed, can beat any playoff team in a 7-game series, including Orlando. Defense and the ability to change-up and adapt will win you a series and Lenny was the only Raptors coach that could handle that.

  7. Raps Fan Says:

Butch handled it pretty well if you ask me. i actually thought he was the best coach the raptors ever had. lenny did well, but he inherited butch’s team much like larry brown took carlisle’s team to the championship.

i am also becoming a late-season philly fan. their style of play is infectious. you have to appreciate the effort and determination.

  8. khandor Says:

As I said in the pre-game thread … it was going to be a close game. win or lose, decided in the last 6 minutes.

Wednesday night is going to be another loss vs Detroit.

  9. Raps Fan Says:

good call, elite’s like denver have the ability to step it up during crunch time. that is what separates them from mid-level teams like the raptors who have to build leads in order to win games.

  10. cheungri Says:

i love when you watch a crunch time raps game, you can actually see their “system” slowly breaking down as the other teams’ coach decides to “play for real”… all the other coaches in the league have already figured out how to beat us, it’s like they’re all just toying with smitch, daring his ffa gamble to win in 3 qtrs before they decide to put the clamps down (which isn’t all that hard these days).

smitch is entertaining, but wining coach he is not. anyone see that look on his face when parker turned the ball over? hilllarious.

  11. Raps Fan Says:

emphasis on system aka no system. when you run and gun, a solid coach will figure a way to counter. unless you are golden state, or phoenix, where your point guard and coaching is next level, and they can account/adjust on the fly.

smitch’s facial expressions have been next level for the last 4 years. my favourites are bc’s pissed off expressions, dude is vex 24/7.

  12. AltRaps Says:

I liked Butch’s firey touch, but how he handled himself in the playoffs was uncalled for and did nothing for the psyche of this team. It was unfortunate.

Oddly enough, I still consider Malone to be our best coach. He took a team made up of jailbirds and malcontents, as well as a rookie playing in an outpost, and made sure they never took a night off.

  13. Raps Fan Says:

lol, malone did a good job, but he ran stoudamire into the ground. probably why his tenure was so short lived. had carter not had those troubles with camby in the playoffs, he would have been around a bit longer. i was surprised he didn’t land anywhere after that. grunwald really torpedoed his career.

  14. Darien Says:

Ye gods. Has the world ended? Because up is down, white is black, and day is night. Not only did Philadelphia beat Boston, but MIAMI won.
