Raptors beat the Nets 109-91 [28-23] - February 13, 2008

Posted on 13 February 2008 by Raps Fan

The game was really secondary to the news that Kidd was traded to the Mavs. With Mr. Triple-Double sent back to where it all began for him, the deflated Nets were ripe for the picking, in fact, the Raptors to ran a train on the Nets ass. This was a classic win for the Raptors over an inferior/deflated/incapable team. They shot the shit out of the ball in the face of no defensive pressure. The outcome of the game was decided in the first with the Raptors surging to an early lead, and never letting up. They put the game out of reach by halftime (I stopped taking notes partway through the 3rd. I apologize, but it is hard to keep up the notes when the Raptors are pounding or getting pounded by a ridiculous margin).

A few things really bugged me about this game. I know, the idiot pessimist at RaptorsTalk.com had issues during a Raptors win, but yea, I did:

  1. Bosh and Calderon should not have seen the floor in the 4th. Bosh got pulled 2 minutes in, but Calderon didn’t get pulled until there was less than 4 minutes left to play in the game. There was no need to risk injury to either of these guys.
  2. In fact, Calderon played 41 minutes in a blow out win. And when he got off, he wrapped his elbow in ice. Ridiculous.
  3. Moon shot too many jumpers again.
  4. Leo is such an asshole. Taking back that invite to Swirsky to spend the holidays with his family.
  5. Bosh held the ball way too long when he got it in the post. Didn’t affect the Raptors tonight, but he can’t be a black hole like that going forward.
  6. Humphries could have used more playing time. If he can’t get playing time in a blowout, when is he gonna see the court?
  7. The Raptors were too sloppy with the ball, turning it over 12 times. To put it in perspective, they only turned the ball over 8 times against the Spurs. I know 12 isn’t that many turnovers, but against this team, it is.
  8. Stromile Swift got way too many dunks down the stretch. I was getting pissed off something fierce.

That’s about all I have to say about this game, it was pretty boring and sucked the life out of me. I’m sure Arsenalist and Dinosty will have more interesting things to say than me. Expect a video podcast on the weekend.

Here’s the play by play:
1st Quarter:

  • Bosh takes it to Krstic on his first possession, high off the glass.
  • Calderon puts it in Carters eye off the high pick from Bosh.
  • Jefferson responds with an air ball from beyond the arc, lol.
  • Calderon takes Williams off the dribble for a layup in the paint.
  • Jefferson responds by launching a brick that makes a thud as it comes off the rim hard, lol.
  • Jefferon gets swatted out of bounds by Bosh.
  • Bargnani forces Jefferson into a 24 second shot clock violation.
  • Moon hits a three from behind the arc. He seems really comfortable taking jumpers he shouldn’t with Smitch not in the country.
  • Boone scores pretty easily in the paint on Bosh, out of a timeout.
  • Calderon tosses perfect alley-oop to Moon for a nice two-hander.
  • Jefferson finally hits from inside the arc, after bricking his first 4.
  • Moon finally drives to the rim drawing a foul, he hits both.
  • Bosh hits Boone with a wicked pump fake, then nails the jumper, he misses the + 1.
  • Calderon finishes a layup in traffic after blowing by Williams.
  • Bosh finds Bargnani under the basket who draws a foul, he hits both from the line.
  • TJ is wearing an ugly ass outfit. That emergency crew orange isn’t cool man.
  • Nochbar nails his first trey, of course he is wide open, but Bosh responds with an alley-oop from Calderon.
  • Bosh hits an ugly half hook in the block.
  • Calderon blows by Sean Williams for a layup.
  • Bargnani draws a charge from Sheldon Williams, good defense.
  • Bosh gets fouled going to the rack from a nice feed from Parker, he hits both from the line.
  • Delfino nails a trey from a Bosh kick out.
  • Bargnani had Armstrong on his hip in the paint, but no one got him the ball, and Delfino missed a three.

2nd Quarter:

  • Armstrong steals the ball from Bosh which leads to a Carter dunk on the break.
  • Kapono curls off a low screen, nailing a 17 footer.
  • That dunk did wonders for Carter, he comes back and hits a tough hook in the paint.
  • Bosh and Rasho protecting the paint with Swift attacking.
  • Delfino attacks the paint, and draws a foul from Carter, he hits both.
  • Nochbar attacking Kapono in the paint, with a pretty turn around hook.
  • Delfino nails a deep trey from the elbow extended.
  • Jefferson and Carter have built a small house with all these bricks.
  • I’m calling this game right now, the Nets are done as a team, unless Harris plays off the chain (which he can).
  • Armstrong nails a three from the corner off a turnover.
  • Rasho grabs an offensive board, and draws a foul under the paint, he hits both.
  • The Raptors are having a hard time inbounding the ball past Armstrong.
  • Bosh hits a jumper over Swift at the top of the key.
  • Stromile returns the favour from he baseline.
  • Calderon penetrates and throws the ball away..
  • Bosh shakes and bakes, drawing a foul off the dribble from Krstic, he hits both.
  • Bargnani forces a turnover and finishes with a trey off the pick and pop with Calderon.
  • Carter nails an open trey off of Jefferson penetration.
  • Bargnani answers with a long jumper of his own - really pissed me off he had his foot on the line when he launched it.
  • Carter forces Parker to shoot an air ball.
  • Bosh shoots over Krstic.
  • Boone misses on the alley-oop after Bosh forgets to D him up.
  • Bargnani helps on Jefferson, blocking his shot, leading to a Calderon layup on the break, in traffic.
  • Bosh hits a turn around jumper over Boone with the shot clock ticking down.
  • Calderon throws away another pass. He then fouls Nachbar on the break back, Boki hits both.
  • Carter fouls Bargnani on a three point attempt and picks up a tech. Bargs hits all three.
  • Carter finds a slashing Jefferson with a sweet pass. Jefferson draws the foul and hits both from the line.
  • Bargnani swings the ball to Jose who hits a trey at the buzzer, Raptors up 21 heading into the half.

3rd Quarter:

  • Carter starts by penetrating the paint, and dropping a nice dime to an open Boone for an uncontested dunk.
  • Calderon is just on fire, nailing a three from Bosh’s kick out from the the post.
  • Raptors force the Nets into another 24 second shot clock violation.
  • Calderon threads the needle on a sweet pick and roll with Bosh, who finishes with a right handed layup.
  • Carter starting to look like he wants to play, a little to late.
  • Parker misses a baseline jumper, but Bosh grabs the offensive board. Possession gets wasted with Moon shooting another three, and missing.
  • Moon finishes a layup on the break over Jefferson.
  • Bosh gets fouled on a ridiculous dunk attempt, he hits both from the stripe.
  • Bosh gets fouled again under the rim, off of a nice lob pass from Calderon, he hits both.
  • Leo is really an asshole, I’m going to throw something at him next time I see him.
  • Moon shoots…forget it, I’m done taking notes, this game is really over. But seriously, I wish he didn’t shoot that ball, he is past my last nerve with his jumpers.
  • As I said wrote that, Moon fakes a jumper, drives baseline dropping it off for Bargnani in the paint for a two handed dunk, nice. Now I’m done.

this game was definetly second to the trad of Kidd. Good win for the Raps and i’m happy that the Nets are splitting the three headed monster that as torched the raps for years, but i dont think the Nets arent worse off. with Harris coming in to play as a combo guard, stack to give them some good minutes off the bench, Diop to be another big body in the paint and two first round picks? this team will still contend for a spot in the east.
I was just reading about how Devean Georges “early bird clause” is screwing up the deal. but this is probably just a speed bump and the trade will be made.

  2. Melvin Says:

Carter should be dealt this offseason. Sadly for the Nets fans, they are now in bloody rebuilding mode.

  3. Melvin Says:

wait the trade was blocked by devean george…!!!

  4. Raps Fan Says:

wow, what a day. i still take it cause the raptors back court can’t cover kidd if their careers depended on it.

carter might get traded, but i don’t see bird trading for him. i say he goes to the east, maybe to the warriors for monta ellis, michael pietrus, and a couple guys to make contracts match. really far fetched, but this is the year of the trade. lol

  5. Shahin Says:

The trade was blocked!!!! What is going on? Why aren’t the Raptors getting someone who can rebound? Just making the playoffs andf losing in the first round is NOT enough!!!

  6. SiC Says:

Raps Fan > would Carter fit on any team on the west?

Shahin > Who do you like (rebounder) for the Raps to get, and for whom?

  7. stinky_pete Says:

I dont care where Carter goes aslong as he’s out of the East. I dont want to see him 4 times a year and then again in the playoffs. The Kidd trade is weird. did you guys see George getting booed last night? He went 0-11 and the Dallas fans didnt appreciate him stopping Kidd from running their point. ahh well at least Kidd didnt play last night

  8. Arsenalist Says:

Swift getting meaningless dunks doesn’t bother me too much. Bosh holds the ball for “way too long” on every possession, it bugs me but I don’t think he’s changing that aspect of his game anytime soon. He’s not a naturally talented offensive guy and almost needs to think about what he’s going to do long and hard before he even tries it.

  9. Raps Fan Says:

george just made life for himself really tough in dallas. if they re-engineer the trade, and he stays, he wont be getting minutes, and he wont get resigned at the end of the year, so his bird rights are useless.

as far as carter fitting in in the west, he can score at will at the two. the spurs definitely could use that. bowen doesn’t shoot as well as he used. carter doesn’t play with the same intensity the spurs do, but he can step up defensively if need be for short burst, and with duncan and their masterful rotation, he would be that much better.

u know arsenalist, theres no such thing as meaningless. i remember in high school, my senior year we had a great team (lost in the quarters of OFSAA), our coach wouldn’t let us take possessions off at any point of the game. we routinely blew teams out like 120-35. if teams got open layups at the end of a romp, the culprit would get pulled, and benched the next game.

swift had like 5 dunks, 1 can deal with, but where is the pride? is this the same bench we say is great nd deep? what great bench would let swift show them up on home court with dunk after dunk. and not even a regular dunk, swift brought the rim down on each one.

i think bosh holding on to the ball so long is bad because he allows the defense to cave in a bit, just kills the game, because when bosh is in motion, he doesn’t have any ability to penetrate and kick, that would open a lot of space for the shooters. he either posts and kicks out, or posts and takes a shot attempt, no in between creativity.

  10. SiC Says:

I wonder if any1 else will slap something together to counter the Dallas offer?

Who else is left 2 be traded? Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Gasol, Shaq, Shawn Marion … maybe Kidd — any other “big” names out there? VC? Jermaine O’neal?

  11. Raps Fan Says:

i’m sure someone will, i don’t think anyone in the west wants to see kidd land in dallas. even though the lakers and the suns have shot ahead, dallas is not far behind. the leadership at point he will bring might be enough to push them over the top.

  12. Shrugz Says:

I still like Devin Harris although whoever said his name with chris paul and deron williams is a moron
don’t know who said it but someone said it LOL

but Jason kidd’s Shooting % is still gonna suck
and I believe dirk’s rebounding will go down cuz of Kidd’s need to get rebounds to start the fast break

  13. Arsenalist Says:

I get a feeling the only reason Vince Carter is still with the Nets is because they’re unable to trade him. It doesn’t make sense for NJ to keep his ridiculous contract, they should try dumping him off to a team that thinks they’re one player away from a contender. Maybe GS could use him and trade away somebody like Pietrus or Barnes who they might lose in free agency anyway.

  14. Raps Fan Says:

i hope they don’t do that, we could use either of those guys badly (my money is on pietrus)! but you’re right, teams may get desperate next year for a scoring 2 like vince, and trade for him, until then, we get him at least 4 more times.

  15. Melvin Says:

Dingdong… the scrambling for trade deadlines has now started… frst victim is Mike Bibby.,.. http://basketballnonsense.blogspot.com/2008/02/bibby-traded-to-hawks.html

  16. Raps Fan Says:

again, another all-star calibre player was moved without much going back in terms of talent.

  17. Daniel Says:

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article , but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
