Raptors beat Pacers 104-93 [14-10] - December 14, 2007

Posted on 15 December 2007 by Raps Fan

These are the types of games the Raptors have to win. They have already let 4/5 slip through their fingers, any more, and I really think there are bigger problems than we all think. It is games like this that really expose how Mitchell’s short comings as a coach. All season, we have been pleading for Kapono to get more minutes and shots, for Bosh to be aggressive and take fools off the dribble, for Humphries to get more minutes. The net result: a Raptors win with huge performances by Kapono, Bosh, Humphries and Calderon. Delfino was solid down the stretch.

Before I get into it, I have a few things in need of mentioning:

Kapono:. He played 34 minutes, and put up 29 points on only 14 shots.

Calderon: 18pts and 16ast, off the chain.

Bosh: 22pts and 16rebs, great game, but a few too many jumpers.

Humphries: 17pts and 5rebs, and a lot of heart!

Delfino: the dude is just a baller. Where the hell would we be without him?

1st Quarter:

  • Honest to God, this “what’s in your wallet” thing is out of hand. The Raptors broadcast crew are a bunch of ass kissing, catch phrase spewing ninnies.
  • Bosh going to the rack early.
  • It is worth mentioning that Smith’s suit was sick. I have go visit his tailor, anyone know who the dude is? I know they did a special on him before, but I didn’t catch it.
  • True to form, the Raptors came out flat.
  • Caldeorn has an uncharacteristic turnover that lead to a Pacers fast break. True to recent form, Smitch calls a timeout.
    • True to form, the Raptors run an ass play out of the timeout.
  • How hard is it to execute a play out of a timeout? I mean seriously, I can’t remember a time they ran a play for an easy bucket from a timeout…
  • Every time down the floor, Smitch calls a play. I don’t know why he bothers. Everyone knows the high pick and roll is coming. Maybe he is pleading that they finish…
  • Bosh is carrying the Raptos on his back, he needs the shooters to open up some space for him to operate.
  • Swirsky’s X-Factor is Kareem Rush? Are you serious? That is his worst pick yet.
  • Indiana is enjoying a wide open paint for easy buckets. The perimeter defense is weak as usual.
  • Somehow, the Raptors are still in the game, despite their bad play. I think this is more a testament to have been playing the weaker teams then their resilience.

2nd Quarter:

  • My prayers (one of them anyways) have been answered: Dixon comes in at point instead of Krispy Kreme Martin.
  • Barngnani can’t swing the ball on the perimeter for hs life. He either shoots it, or makes a weak pump fake that gets him nowhere.
  • Humphries shouldn’t be the first option on offense. He luckily drew a foul the second time he forced it to the rack.
  • Raps zone defense is weak.
  • Kapono is fire, and Dixon is getting him the ball.
  • Humphries is getting his hands dirty on the boards.
  • Bosh got pretty good rest in the 2nd. He could have used his offense, but I’ll take it.
  • Indiana’s dance pack are pretty nasty, I wasn’t liking what I saw - maybe it was the costumes.
  • Bagnani didn’t swing the ball, AGAIN, and gets called for a charge.
  • Chuck: “Jack, give us an observation, are the Raptors flat tonight?” You blind Chuck, seriously?

That play when Delfino stole the ball, turner it over and then came back and swatted the ball was awesome. quality minutes again from Defino, but especially Hump and Kapono.
thats why having a deep bench is so great. guys step up and play well and they get rewarded with PT. Calderon is awesome and Bosh is playing crazy bball right now. BIG win…I love it

the bench is all fine and dandy, but i think the starting 5 needs some work. moon would be more useful off the bench, and delfino a starter.

Agreed with masterjuddi, that play was the turning point. It was a five point swing which completely turned the momentum. That play and Humphries’ steal which led to another Kapono 3 were the two key play last night.

The “what’s in your wallet” thing is extremely stupid. But that’s what you get with Chuck Swirsky these days, the only guy with a real sense of humour is Jack Armstrong who always makes me laugh by calling it straight-up.

Saw the highlights and Kapono had a great second half. I think the great debate is who are the starting 5 ? I guess a long road trip against West coast teams would be a great chance to try out some different combinations. Moon’s a keeper but maybe not ready to start every day.
