The Toronto Raptors announced Saturday that they are bringing back veteran point guard Darrick Martin. Martin, who averaged 3.0 points and 1.4 assists last season, will give depth to a backcourt that already includes TJ Ford and Jose Calderon.
Also announced Saturday was the re-signing of senior basketball adviser Wayne Embry. The new deal will keep Embry with the team through the 2009-2010 season.

pretty miner news, but worth reporting to all raptor fans. Martin did a good job stepping in last season when Ford was injured. he doesnt try to do too much and rarely turns the ball over. barring injury i doubt he’ll see many minutes this season. I like Colangelo so if he wanted to resign Embry to a new deal then i like it

i was wondering if the raps were gonna bring Martin back. i know originally they signed martin to help Calderon to adapt to the nba, and i think he’s done his job so i dont know why martin is back.must be a well like guy in the locker room or something

Blog friends - goody!
Thanks for coming to check out the blog. Just getting started, next week we’ll be off wordpress and get ourselves a snazzy new header, just like yours!
Re: Grandpa Martin - I’d love to see him graciously step down at the end of the season and step in for Sherm “Lazy Eye” Hamilton on Raptors Today. Derrick’s insider knowledge and access would be valuable, not to mention the fact that the players would likely be more candid with a friend, saving us from the woody and downright embarrassing interviews Raps Today gives us now. Not to mention, I’ve got old gym shoes that would be more interesting than Sherm. Where’s Norma when you need her?
Keep up the good work - and Go Raps GO!

no prob…gotta support.
there is really no where to go but up from the analysts covering the raptors. i want an ex ball player giving insights and what not.
i suspect martin will be on the IL for LOOOOONG stretches.

Hey, in your banner photo, is that Rasho to the far LEFT? The guy with the Tom Everett Scott hairdo a la That Thing You Do? He looks like he just left the steam bath (not to mention hacked off at the knees).

re: your comment on Dinosty:
Calderon could easily be the starting PG, in my opinion. But unlike TJ, he’s content in coming off the bench. If the roles were reversed, there would be daily articles in the Star where TJ bitched about being the 6th man. That’s the difference between them - forget what they do on the court, it’s their personalities that make Calderon a better player. Because he’ll find a way to gel, no matter what. And we all know by now that talent doesn’t necessarily equal chemistry (Marion, Kobe, T-Mac, etc.)

i agree…i guess the litmus test will be what calderon does in a contract year. people change when millions of dollars are on the line. i don’t know that bc lets that sort of thing overshadow what this franchise is trying to do. i think i am going to write a post about this….

look people! TJ is the man in Toronto, simply because we committed 11 million a year for him to run the offense not to come off the bench… furthermore, TJ is the quickest player in the NBA, you don’t trade someone like that. He is explosive off the dribble and distributes the ball, and I would argue better than Calderon. Jose takes way to many jumpshots, and seems to look for his own shot more than TJ. I go with Ford all the way and I don’t look back.

for me, an equal case can be made both ways. we will find out in a couple months who bc wants.
