Raptors make a few moves

Posted on 11 July 2007 by masterjuddi

Bryan Colangelo made a move today when he signed Indiana Pacer restricted free agent Maceo Baston to an offer sheet. The Pacers have 7 days to match the offer, but if they decide not to Baston will become the newest Raptors.

Baston played 16 games for the Raptors in the 2002-03 seasons, averaging just 2.6 ppg. What must have been intriguing for Colangelo was Baston’s success overseas with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Along with fellow Raptor Anthony Parker Maccabi were two time Euroleague Champions. Baston averaged 14.5 ppg and 5.1 rpg. Baston is an athletic big man who should help the Raptors with their rebounding and shot blocking.

In another move, the Raptors have signed forward Jamario Moon to a two year contract. Moon was part of the Raptors free agent camp this summer and played his way into an NBA contract. Also, the free agent signing of sharpshooter Jason Kapono was made official today.

true enough these players dont look like much on paper,b ut in the right system you never know. take a look at Anthony Parker, the guys played for years overseas and no nba teams wanted him. now he’s a solid two-way player that fits in well with the raps. i’m not saying either of these guys will have an impact like AP, but BC is the man and the man made the moves for a reason.

looks like maceo and jamario will be replacing pape and uros at the end of the bench. these aren’t significant signings, but will maintain the bench to some degree.

can’t speak to jamario, because i have never heard that name until he got signed, but baston has been bouncing around the league, nbdl and europe since i was high school. don’t expect much from him.

humphries came on late in the season when given some minutes, and i expect most of the bench minutes for forwards will come his way. he really earned it.

i was reading an article on yahoo sports about this Jamario Moon and it looks like he had a lot of attention during the free agent period. A scout for another Eastern Conference team who watched Moon play said, “Don’t be shocked if that kid turns out to be a contributor for the Raptors.” It is nice to see something positive about this kid.
i just say that the Hornets signed Mopete to a contract. good for him, i’m pretty sure the Hornets singed him to an offer sheet a few years back. did you guys think it was werid that Kapono chose 24 before it was official that Mopete signed with the Hornets?

well, it is good to hear moon had some suitors. hopefully he adds some value, and isn’t just someone for bosh to beat up on in practice.

the hornets offers mopete a 3/$15mill contract and the raptors matched. looks like they finally got their man.

as far as kapono signing…everyone knew mopete wasnt going to be returning, and he wasnt going to get that money anywhere else. he will be getting at least 25 minutes a night, so it works out well for him, specially with the raptors on the up and up.

I was surprised when Baston was let go a few years ago, he always showed great athleticism and looked like he might belong on the court.

Hopefully this time around he can get enough minutes to show what he’s capable off. Humphs is a component that can definitely be upgraded and Baston might be a good candidate.

  7. Raps Fan Says:

i dont know about surprised, but the raptors have always been pretty short on the front line (aside from the oakley years).
