Jesus, Jose and the mid-level

Not surprisingly, the Toronto media is inept at reporting any developments on the trade front (speculation or otherwise). Leave it to the fellas in New York to keep us up to date on what Colangelo is up too. It has been interesting to read all the trade scenarios the Raptors threw their hats in the ring for over the last year. The latest one being sending last year’s number one pick to Seatle for Ray Allen. This is the second time we could have brought Jesus to the Raptors (the first being trading Carter for him straight up during the Babcock era). Allen is exactly the type of talent the Raptors need at the three. Too bad we can’t afford him now.

More talk about Jose being shopped around. I am not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, it is sweet having two capable point guards on the team. How many games did we win this year because we had a guy to pick up the slack when needed? On the other hand, you need a clear number, even though Ford is paid # 1 dollars. In Mitchell’s helter skelter system, there was no clear number one. You could see it on Fords face when he got pulled out of games in the 4th, and the Raptors would rally for the win. Something that concerns me about trading Calderon is that he is not being paid market for a player of his caliber. I assume there would need to be a bigger trade with Calderon as the center piece.

New York also got the dirt on the possible signing of Mickael Pietrus for the mid-level. Not sure if the Frenchman will come that cheap, but it’s worth a shot. He’s no Ray Allen/Gerald Wallace, but he would address the glaring gap for a starting scoring/rebounding/slashing 3.

I don’t know about Ray Allen - too perimeter oriented and getting up their in age. I think Rashard Lewsis is a better fit for us but it doesn’t really matter since we can’t afford either one.

Gerald Wallace is an obvious fit but who knows if that’ll happen. It’d be interesting to see what Calderon would fetch on the market, his value might be at its peak right now because I don’t expect him to have the same season next year just based on the adjustments NBA teams make. I wouldn’t trade Calderon because next year we’ll definitely see who the better PG will be and then we can make our decision.

allen is a bit perimeter oriented, but he would give us another solid perimeter defender, and stretch out the defense for bosh to operate down low. rashard is definitely a better fit, but he lacks ray allen’s leadership.

i am pretty sure colangelo wouldn’t have inked tj to that contract so quickly if he knew calderon was going to step it up. still not sure how much better jose can get from here. nice to have options for once though!
