Mitchell Watch # 4

Posted on 22 May 2007 by Raps Fan

I had a bad feeling while I was asleep last night. I continually woke up, and walked around the house, had some snacks, watched some TV, played with Yoshi (my dog). I woke up this morning, and Yoshi was gnawing on a Raptors scarf I have. It was a give-a-way I got at one of the games a few years ago, and I have no idea how he found it, but there he was, chewing the hell out of it.

It didn’t sit right with me. He chews bloody everything I own, but he mostly goes for the good stuff: pens, paper, shoes, straws, records, cell phones, and anything else he gets his paws on. I didn’t get the irony until I cracked open the Metro on my way to work, and saw that Mitchell is going to be sworn in, for another three year term, as the head coach. I literally felt the whole subway spin…very surreal moment for me.

All of a sudden, everything I have been reading about the Mitchell situation made sense to me. Every Canadian journalist spewed that they thought Mitchell is the write man for the job, but never substantiated why, other than to offer a bit of fluff about how he won 47 games with a good team…and so on.

I didn’t see the writing on the wall, because I am an idealist. In my corner of the world, Mitchell was a good choice to bring these cats together, win a few games, get into the playoffs, and give a taste of what playing in the NBA is all about. He is a tactical coach, not a strategic one by any stretch of the imagination. You only had to look at the Sun-Spurs series to see what real coaching was about. D”Antoni and Poppovich were making changes faster than you could shake a stick at….well you know the rest.

Seems as though the dollar and terms of the term would not prohibit Colangelo from pulling the plug quickly if Mitchell does not hit the ground running. What I am really interested to see is what Mitchell’s plan is in terms of what the Raptors will do in the playoffs, and how they do it. They get a pass this year for their playoff performance, because they exceeded all expectations, but next year is a different story. If they don’t challenge for a seat in the conference finals, Mitchell could be sent packing. Again, it could be the idealist talking…

This is a totally random thought and not related to this but I saw BC near Bloor/Bedford a few days back as I was walking out of work. He was with his kid and I said something stupid like “Go Raptors” to him and he goes, “Hey, hows it going man”.

    Thats it.

dude, you can say whatever you want, i got your back.

i wish i lived at bloor/bedford. you should have stopped and talked to him, got an interview for the arsenalist. i saw neterovic at spacco last thursday, and tried to get an interview, but the dude he was with said no, and i’m pretty sure he swore at me in serbian, then walked off.

He was with his kid there. You could tell his son was annoying him cuz he had that “pissed off father look”.

Hey on a more basketballrelated topid do you have a mock draft? If so I’d love to see it and I really wanna know who you like for your Raptors to choose and who you think my Bucks will take.

the Raptors don’t have a pick (1st or 2nd round) in this years draft, and i don’t suspect they will trade for a pick (although it is possible they get a pick as part of a trade). i don’t think they need any more young guys (bosh, ford and bargnani are enough of a young core).

as far as the bucks, they need a point gaurd. if conley is available, i would snap him up. they might elect to take another athletic big guy, but that would add to the log jam at the forward/center position for them.

I was reading a RealGM thread about some guy who met the architect and said to him that they’re doing all they can to get in the draft. Not exactly a reliable source but whatever.

I agree with you, we have enough young guys. Time to get some experience in here.
